Unexplained Boom Reported Across Eastern Massachusetts

(MENAFN) Residents across eastern Massachusetts, including the Boston area, reported hearing a powerful explosion-like sound on Saturday, prompting numerous calls to local authorities as officials worked to determine its source, according to reports.

The loud boom was heard in several communities, including Boston, Cambridge, Arlington, Concord, Winchester, Scituate, Lynnfield, and other nearby municipalities. Despite widespread reports, authorities said no immediate hazards, damage, or public safety threats had been identified.

Meteorologist Pamela Gardner suggested that the phenomenon may have been caused by a bolide or meteor entering the Earth's atmosphere. She noted that satellite data detected a flash over the Boston area despite the absence of thunderstorms and that no earthquake activity had been recorded by the US Geological Survey.

Police and fire departments throughout the region reported receiving numerous inquiries from concerned residents. In statements shared on social media, several agencies acknowledged the incident but said they had no information pointing to a specific cause.

Watertown police stated that the boom was heard across much of eastern Massachusetts and that there were “no reports of hazards at this time.” Authorities in Coventry, Rhode Island, also reported receiving calls and suggested the sound may have resembled an earthquake or similar event.

Cambridge police said they were aware of the reports but noted that they had not identified any incident originating within the city.

In Newbury, fire officials said residents described experiencing what felt like a significant geological event, with some comparing it to a sonic wave or explosion. Officials added that they had not found any indication of a public safety threat in the area.

Needham police urged residents not to overwhelm emergency phone lines, noting that dispatchers were handling regular service calls while officials continued monitoring reports related to the unexplained boom.

As of the latest reports, authorities had not confirmed the cause of the phenomenon.
